FAQs

Answers to Your Top Real Estate Questions with Greater Tulsa Board of Realtist

What is the National Association of Real Estate Brokers (NAREB)?

The National Association of Real Estate Brokers (NAREB) is a professional organization committed to ensuring equal housing opportunities for all. Established in 1947, NAREB is dedicated to promoting "democracy in housing" and supporting the growth of Black homeownership in America. Members of NAREB, known as "Realtists," include professionals across the real estate industry, such as brokers, agents, loan officers, appraisers, and developers. NAREB's mission extends beyond real estate to advocate for social and economic justice within underserved communities. Visit https://www.nareb.com/our-history/

The History of NAREB?

NAREB was founded in Tampa, Florida, on July 29, 1947, by a group of African American real estate professionals. These pioneers were excluded from the National Association of Realtors due to racial discrimination, prompting them to establish an organization to advocate for fair housing and support Black real estate professionals. NAREB has since played a vital role in challenging discriminatory practices and promoting policies that address systemic barriers to homeownership. Its legacy includes key advocacy efforts, such as supporting the Fair Housing Act of 1968 and engaging leaders like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in its mission for economic empowerment.

Is this a Black only Organization?

The Greater Tulsa Board of Realtist (GTBR) is an inclusive organization dedicated to serving all underserved and historically marginalized communities in Tulsa. Although GTBR has roots in promoting Black homeownership through its affiliation with the National Association of Real Estate Brokers (NAREB), it is not a “Black-only” organization. Rather, GTBR’s commitment lies in supporting equitable housing access and economic growth for all people who face challenges in achieving these goals, regardless of race or ethnicity.GTBR's mission is to advocate for democracy in housing and improve financial literacy and homeownership for people who may lack adequate resources, information, or support in Tulsa. The organization’s leadership reflects this inclusive commitment, with board members from Black, White, and Hispanic backgrounds, all united by the goal of bridging opportunity gaps for underserved populations.GTBR's focus on community empowerment goes beyond race; it addresses structural inequalities that impact many diverse groups in Tulsa.
